Bon Appétit Management Company Hosts Second Annual Chefs’ Playground to Benefit the Academy for Global Citizenship
More than $435,000 raised to support the school’s future development
CHICAGO – (May 19, 2014) Bon Appétit Management Company and Chef Tony Mantuano hosted the second annual Chefs’ Playground to benefit the Academy for Global Citizenship (AGC), an innovative Chicago public charter school located in the underserved southwest side. With over 500 people in attendance, the event raised over $435,000, thanks in part to a matching challenge grant from the George & Amanda Hanley Foundation. A portion of these funds will go toward the development of the first net-positive energy school in Illinois, which will include a novel approach to school food service, thanks to the vision of Bon Appétit Management Company CEO Fedele Bauccio.
The special evening featured 20 of Chicago’s best chefs and mixologists – including, Stephanie Izard (Girl & The Goat), Jeff Mauro (The Food Network’s “The Sandwich King”), and Paul Kahan (Avec, The Publican) – who put a haute spin on favorite childhood dishes and drinks. Guests also enjoyed music from DJ Greg Corner while taking in the view of the Chicago Skyline from Terzo Piano at the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.
“We are so thankful to Bon Appétit Management Company, our sponsors and partners, the chefs and our guests for sharing in our vision to reimagine what’s possible in public school education,” said Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, founder and executive director of the Academy for Global Citizenship. “This event is helping to catapult AGC into its next phase of innovation and continuing to push the boundaries around what’s possible if we dream big.”
AGC’s net-positive school campus will be the first in the state to generate all the energy it uses in addition to providing energy to the grid. This model, built upon the integration of sustainable practices into the learning environment, acts as a “third teacher” for the students. To further encourage healthy learning, Fedele Bauccio announced he will design a café for the campus that will incorporate digital interaction and a hands-on teaching kitchen.
“A key part of our mission is to educate people about how their food choices impact the global environment and local economies. AGC is a perfect example of this coming to life within a school,” said Fedele Bauccio. “We’re excited to join forces to show how nutrition and wellness can be integrated successfully within a core public-school education.”
This fresh approach to school food will allow students, staff and families to learn about where their food comes from while they nourish their bodies and brains. The nutrition program will also feature
culinary classes with local chefs—including some featured at Chefs’ Playground—to help shift the profile of public school food from processed to fresh, real and whole foods.
