We are looking for a passionate and energetic teacher to teach Wellness to 3rd-6th graders. Wellness is a class unique to AGC that combines physical education with nutrition education, environmental education and work in our edible schoolyard garden! Wellness Teacher

Overview:

The Academy for Global Citizenship’s mission is to empower students to positively impact their community and world beyond. As an authorized International Baccalaureate school, AGC employs an inquiry-based curriculum that challenges each learner to construct personal meaning from concept-driven units of study. Moreover, AGC teachers design lessons and activities that prepare students to be environmentally and internationally minded by examining how their choices impact their community and the world. An AGC education also extends beyond the classroom. Organic, nutritionally balance meals, daily yoga, wellness instruction and ecologically sustainable practices throughout the school encourage learners to develop healthy and sustainable lifestyles for themselves. Ultimately, the Academy for Global Citizenship engages the whole child in an enriching educational community focused on fostering academic excellence, international awareness and environmental stewardship.

 

General Responsibilities:

• Develops and delivers an integrated wellness, physical education, and health curriculum which places a heavy emphasis on movement, mindfulness, and nutrition

• Delivers lessons in outdoor classroom, weather permitting

• Stays abreast of national best practices and is a thought leader in exemplary wellness programming

• Provides accommodations and modifications for students with special needs according to their Individual Education Plans

• Documents curriculum plans via weekly lesson plans and long-term unit plans

• Develops assessments to measure the effectiveness of the wellness program

 

Wellness, Nutrition & Physical Education:

• Leads students in daily movement, physical education and/or mindfulness classes, 3rd to 6th grade in 80 minute periods

• Implements physical and nutrition education classes, including the administration of pre- and posttests to all students to assess growth in physical fitness and nutritional awareness

 

Sustainability & Garden:

• Uses the school garden to support nutrition education.  This may include, leading lessons in cooking and preserving and making concrete connections between what students are eating in the lunchroom and what is being grown in the garden

 

Family & Community Engagement:

• Creates a model program for integrating our families and community in our wellness education programming

• Supports or leads the development of sports programming at the school

• Supports or leads the development of staff wellness programming at the school

 

Skills & Experience:

• Exemplifies a fervent commitment to the school’s mission and vision

• Displays a relentless drive to increase personal and student achievement

• Demonstrates and models academic excellence

• Exhibits strong communication, interpersonal and team skills

 

Education Requirements:

• Illinois State Teaching Certificate preferred

• Master’s Degree in a related field preferred

• Bachelor’s Degree in related field minimum

• Two or more years of related experience
