We are delighted to announce the completion of two mosaic murals on October 15th, 2013. These parallel murals, created by the Green Star Movement, with help from students at Hearst and AGC are the final touch to a community garden built between our school buildings. Through partnership with Chicago’s oldest land conservation organization, Openlands, this garden marks the next step in the ever-developing partnership between the Academy for Global Citizenship and our neighbors at Phoebe A. Hearst Elementary School.
While we work on securing land for our energy net-positive school campus, AGC’s 350 students are split between two rented facilities Chicago’s southwest side.. Grades K-2 occupy a former barrel factory on 47th street and grades 3rd-6th occupy a building on the campus of Hearst Elementary, a district-operated public school on 46th street across Cicero. Since we have been sharing space, our partnership has developed, from borrowing the Hearst auditorium for a talent shows here and 5th grade IB PYP exhibition there to exchanging letters pen-pal style for a literacy lesson, to, now, collaborating to build a garden and a parent patrol.
We are proud of the work we have done together and look forward to building an even stronger partnership to improve our community and opportunities for our students.
