Our summer camp enjoyed another incredible visitor today, Mr. Alex Poltorak, founder and CEO of Urban Canopy.
Mr. Poltorak, who founded the organization in 2011, was inspired in part by work as a teaching fellow to help develop a more sustainable and equitable food system. Urban Canopy’s mission is to promote and encourage urban gardening by demystifying the process and innovating to make it as easy as possible. Urban Canopy uses industrial materials like PVC plumbing pieces, burlap sacks and buckets to create hydroponic systems, living hedges and other creative and productive structures.
Mr. Alex inspired us to think about growing organic produce in creative places such as rooftops and vacant lots. After a preview, we went on a walking field trip of the neighborhood to spot the most eligible rooftop real estate.
